For framers and makers

See the mat before you cut.

Mat Span Frame is a bench for artwork and outer frame sizes. Opening, borders, glass, and backing update as you set the mat.

Shape the border

On the live workbench you can drag the opening. Borders refresh as it moves. Bottom-weight pulls depth toward the lower edge for a museum hang, while the side borders stay matched. A double mat adds an inner offset and a second, smaller opening.

Start from a known size

The size library holds common art sizes, frame shells, and drop-in pairings, plus templates you can place on the bench.

Keep the shop set

Rename, duplicate, or delete a design. Search by name, notes, or template. Switch inches and millimetres, and choose light, dark, or the system appearance. A home-screen widget shows outer size, opening, and border widths for the last active design.

Frequently asked questions

What do I set first?

Artwork width and height, then the outer mat or frame. The bench fills in the opening and the four borders.

Can I work in millimetres?

Yes. Settings switches between inches and millimetres, and holds your default reveal, bottom-weight, and rabbet inset.

What is bottom-weight?

Extra depth on the bottom border compared with the top. It is the usual adjustment for a museum-style hang.

How does a double mat work?

Turn on double mat and set an inner offset. You then see the outer opening and the smaller inner opening.

Where do the library sizes come from?

A built-in catalog of photo and print sizes, ISO A-series sheets, standard frame shells, common drop-in pairings, and the starter templates named above.

Can I take a cut list to the table?

Yes. Share writes a plain-text cut list for the design you have open. You can also step backward or forward on the bench with undo and redo.

What does the widget show?

Outer size, opening, and border widths for the last design marked active.

Support

Mat Span Frame is made by Ruth Phillips. If a size, a template, or a readout on the bench is unclear, write with the design name and what you were setting. That is enough to look at the question.
